Hyundai launches LPG variant of i10 model

New Delhi: With high petrol prices and rising interest rates turning prospective buyers wary of making a car purchase, auto majors have decided to roll out cost effective options in a bid to bring down running costs.

One such attempt came from Hyundai Motor on Tuesday when it launched the LPG variant of its bestselling i10 model.

Priced between Rs 4,16,144 and Rs 4,30,659 (ex-showroom Delhi), the car is powered by a 1.1 litre iRDE2 engine, can run on both LPG and petrol, and has a factory-fitted LPG kit.

"The LPG kit in i10 blue drive is impact resistant and is approved by the department of explosives," an official statement from the company said.

According to Hyundai, the car's LPG tank offers larger boot space than other LPG-fitted cars.

Other features of the i10 LPG include an alternator management system that can control delivery of power to the battery. This results in extended battery life and better mileage.

"The LPG version of our next-gen i10 is a viable alternative for customers looking at low running cost," said H.W. Park, managing director and chief executive, Hyundai Motor India Ltd.

"With separate petrol (35 litre) and LPG (34 litre) tanks, the customers have an option to choose from LPG and petrol modes," the company statement said.

It is just a matter of time before Hyundai India unveils the LPG variant of the Hyundai Eon small car, whcih was launched earlier today. We’re quite certain about this as test mules of the Hyundai Eon LPG are already doing the rounds in and around Chennai. Petrol prices are at stratospheric levels even as the price of LPG is still significantly lower when compared to petrol. As such, many small car owners are going in for after market LPG kits for their cars even though doing so will void their warranty as LPG as a fuel is much more corrosive than petrol. A factory fitted LPG kit however is a lot more different.

Developed and tested by the automaker, factory fitted LPG kits ensure extra lubrication of critical engine parts and also use tougher engine material to withstand the corroding effects of LPG. So, many prospective small car buyers prefer to buy cars fitted with LPG kits at its manufacturing end itself, with LPG as a dual fuel option along with petrol. At the press conference after the launch, Arvind Saxena, Director of Sales and Marketing at Hyundai India, clearly mentioned that Hyundai India is targeting a sales volume of 1.4 to 1.5 Lakhs Hyundai Eons every ~~month~~ year.

At that projected number, the Hyundai Eon has all the potential to eat into some fraction of the Maruti Alto’s sales. An LPG variant of the Eon will only cause additional headache for Maruti. Taking into consideration all these factors, the time looks ripe for Maruti to launch an LPG dual fuel variant of the Alto, which has been one variant that India’s largest car maker does not have in its portfolio despite the Alto being the largest selling car in India. What it does have however is a CNG engined variant of the 796cc F8D Alto, although availability of CNG fuel remains quite limited in India.

Hence, the argument for an LPG powered Alto gets stronger. On whether Maruti Suzuki will respond quickly to maintain its leadership status in the Indian car market is something that only time will tell. For now, the competitively priced Hyundai Eon, with its exciting range of features, an attractive and contemporary form factor, superb interiors, a frugal petrol engine and last but not the least, Hyundai’s well established sales and after sales service, has all the trappings of giving the Maruti Alto’s top end variants a run for their money.

Citizens find answer to rising petrol prices in LPG run cars

ALLAHABAD: With LPG auto gas available at three filling stations in the Sangam city, showroom owners are receiving more and more queries for cars that can run on LPG and petrol.

"Sale of DUO (Petrol and LPG) mode cars is undoubtedly picking up in the market as compared to petrol run cars," said a sales executives. Analysts too feel that the car industry continues to face a challenging environment at this moment with high interest rates and fuel prices as big dampeners. Also the choppy markets and high inflammation are also acting as negative factors.

Currently, companies are backing on new models, including DUOs and the coming festive season, where demand usually peaks, to realise the growth.

Abhishek Kumar Srivastava, an executive at a showroom, says, "Buyers are more interested in DUO-fuel run mode cars. Rising fuel prices and interest rates have been instrumental in this sluggish market trend."

Though petrol-run cars are readily available at showrooms, if you want to go for a duo-petrol and LPG run car, the waiting period is around 15-20 days. Apart from petrol, people are also asking about diesel run cars but they are also apprehensive that prices of diesel could rise in future.

The demand in DUO segment has undoubtedly increased since petrol price rise has been disturbing the buyers. In past two months, over 150 cars of DUO mode were sold out in compared to 60 of petrol run cars, said a sales executive.

Increasing petrol prices have also diverted the attention of car owners towards government authorised dealers who deal in commercial LPG car kits. The RTO has been receiving over 5-10 applications on routine basis for the installation of approved LPG kit.

"Most people are approaching RTO seeking permission to install LPG kit-run and strength of such applications have increased in the last three months," said an RTO official adding that over 1,500 cars are currently running on LPG kits in the district alone he added. Running a car on LPG is much cheaper than petrol.

Since all the three LPG filling stations are working, a big section of car lovers have already switched over to duo models of cars (run either on petrol or LPG) or have got LPG kits installed. They are waiting for the day when they would be able to spend less on fuel.

"As there were no chances of petrol prices coming down, it was better for us to purchase DUO model car," said Arvind Singh who purchased a DUO mode car last month.

Mohd Aman, who also purchased a DUO model car, says, "There is a little hope of petrol prices coming down and this might go up in near future. So it was my family idea to purchase DUO mode car to bear the expenses easily. LPG auto stations are working successfully, we are easily affording our travel expenses."

The three LPG filling stations set up at Chintamani Road, Phaphamau and Jhunsi are witnessing adequate customers.

The frequent rise in fuel prices has led to an unprecedented rush in the demand for LPG auto gas admitted a senior IOC official.

Auto experts claim that car buyers prefer duo model of cars as running on LPG is costs less (Rs 1.75 to cover one km on LPG). Car owners find LPG-run cars cheaper and affordable and more and more owners are willing to install LPG kits, said an auto expert Devendra Dixit.

Hyundai adds to its alternate fuel range

New Delhi, May 21, 2009: Hyundai Motor India Ltd., the country’s largest passenger car exporter and the second largest car manufacturer, as part of its initiative to promote eco-friendly and non-polluting means of transport, today launched its LPG variant of the very popular Accent. The LPG, bi-fuel variant will be priced at Rs 533,900 which is Rs 34,900 more than the existing petrol model and it is fitted with an engine immobilizer as a standard fitment for added security.

What is LPG?

LPG is a clean, high octane, abundant and eco-friendly fuel. LPG is obtained both from natural gas processing through fractionation and from crude oil refining. It is a mixture of petroleum gases like ethane and butane.
LPG is a gas at atmospheric pressure and normal temperatures, but it can be liquefied when moderate pressure is applied or when the temperature is sufficiently reduced. This property makes LPG an ideal energy source for a wide range of applications, as it can be easily condensed, packaged, stored and utilized. When the pressure is released, the liquid makes up about 270 times its volume as gas, so large amounts of energy can be stored and transported compactly.

The primary aim of the Auto Fuel Policy is to formulate measures that will help to reduce auto emissions and improve air quality. Improving air quality, where the health costs resulting from air pollution are considerable, is a compelling objective. A 1995 study (Carter Brandon and Kirsten Homman. 1995. The Cost of Inaction: Valuing the Economy-wide Cost of Environmental Degradation in India, presented at “Modelling Global Sustainability” Conference held at the United Nations University, Tokyo.) for instance, estimated the annual health costs resulting from urban air pollution in 36 cities to be in the range of a low of US $ 517 million (about Rs. 2500 crore) and a high of US $2102 million (about Rs. 10,000 crore). Average of the low and high values for the estimated environmental impacts in the above mentioned study ector wise were as follows: Health impacts of water pollution ($5,710 million, or 59% of the total); agricultural output loss due to soil degradation ($1,942 million, or 20%); health impacts of air pollution ($1310 million, or 14%); loss of livestock carrying capacity due to rangeland degradation $328 million, or 3%); the cost of deforestation ($214 million, or 2%); and loss of international tourism ($213 million, or 2%). A recent study (Ramaprasad Sengupta, Ashok Lahiri and Subrata Mandal. 2002. Saving on Health Cost from Implementation of Euro Norms in India.) entitled “Savings on Health Cost from Implementation of Euro Norms in India has provided estimates of health costs of auto emissions under different scenarios, i.e. pre-Euro, Euro II, Euro III and Euro IV emission based on study of 25 cities. According to the study annual health costs with pre-Euro specifications are estimated at Rs. 679 crore under the low cost scenario and Rs. 9,308 crore under the high cost scenario. Health costs under Euro II, Euro III and Euro IV scenario are evidently lower as a result of the improvement in vehicular technology and fuels. Savings on health costs, according to the study, are expected to be of the order of 86 per cent under Euro II, of 90 per cent under Euro III and upto 93 % under Euro IV over pre-Euro specifications. Upgrading auto fuel quality and vehicular technology to levels that are compatible with the emission norms as set out in Chapter 12, are crucial components in any strategy that aims at reducing auto emissions and improving air quality. Improving fuel quality entails investment in plants, and equipments in the refineries. Similarly, investments are needed to enable the automobile industry to produce vehicles that are compatible with the recommended emission norms.

Why LPG?
Air-borne emissions of the principal regulated noxious gases from Auto LPG use are among the lowest of all the automotive fuels commercially available today.According to tests, Auto LPG generates significantly lower carbon monoxide (50% lower), hydrocarbon and nitrous oxide (45%) emissions compared to petrol, and even lower emissions compared to diesel.

Only Autogas LPG cylinders or those factory-fitted by your car manufacturer are safe for use in vehicles. These cylinders are specially constructed for use in transportation and face rigorous testing before being fitted into your vehicle. NEVER use domestic LPG cylinders to power your vehicle. It is not only ILLEGAL - being a gross violation of the Auto LPG Control Order - but a POTENTIALLY FATAL HAZARD as well.In India, an estimated 4 million car owners have retro-fitted LPG kits with domestic cylinders in their vehicles. Most of these cylinders are spurious and unsafe for use in vehicles, and lead to the explosions and fires that we read about.
Following are some of the reasons why a domestic cylinder should never be fitted in a vehicle. Vulnerability Domestic cylinders are vulnerable in a crash situation. Potential Health Hazard
- If the supply line in a domestic cylinder is sheared in a crash situation, there will be an uncontrolled flow of LPG into the vehicle interior.
- When the interiors of a vehicle becomes very hot – like during the Indian summer - the safety relief valve of the cylinder may open to release excess pressure, creating a safety hazard within the interior of the vehicle.
- In some cases, cylinders are not fitted with a safety valve. The connection between the cylinder and the engine is then vulnerable to rupture, leading to LPG entering the vehicle space.
Lower Pulling Power The power delivered by a domestic cylinder is less than from a Autogas cylinder specially constructed for use in transportation. The engine does not respond well during increased load conditions like quick accelerating or climbing a slope.

In contrast to diesel, cold starting is no problem, engine performance is similar to petrol.
No spilling when filling your tank and little possibility of theft or pilfering.
Engine noise is reduced.
LPG is better than petrol because it reaches the engine in gas form leading to improved combustion.
The ignition of Autogas is smoother as a result of the higher octane content. No additives are required to guarantee high quality.
The life of the engine is increased because of the absence of acids and carbon deposits.
Autogas contains no lead and is therefore cleaner.
Exhaust emissions contain less harmful substances when compared to petrol and diesel.
The engine oil does not become diluted with a resulting drop in servicing costs.

Our view is that LPG is a cleaner fuel specifically:
LPG produces 33% less CO2 emissions than petrol and 45% less CO2 than diesel.
LPG vehicles produce upto 82% less Nitrogen Oxide pollutants than petrol and 99% better than diesel !
63% less Carbon Monoxide.
40% less Hydrocarbons than petrol and 70% less than diesel.
50% less particulates than petrol and 98% less than diesel. These caused the London warning in 2005.
At present the energy that goes into production of other bio fuels such as bio diesel and soya based fuels is substantial and the full environmental impact has not been calculated by the experts.
Although there has been a lot of media attention on electric cars the carbon footprint is enourmous. The raw materials are mined in remote parts of the world and then flown to specialist refining plants in the west, before being flown to the car plant. Recharging of cars may also require the use of mains power. Electric power generation has it’s own ecological problems that are well known. So our view is that this will move the problem elsewhere rather than tackling root cause.
